A Decade of Design Collaborations
Over the past 10 years, we’ve had the privilege of partnering with some of the world’s most renowned designers and industry leaders to craft unique, handmade bed designs. As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the creativity, passion, and collaborative spirit that has driven us forward while exploring the stories behind the pieces that will continue to inspire bespoke bed designs in the decades to come.
At Savoir, every collaboration with a creative partner is driven by a shared passion for bespoke craftsmanship and a commitment to creating luxurious furniture and interiors that are both innovative and timeless. Each designer’s specific style is reflected in their bed design, but at the heart of every piece is the same tailor-made philosophy, an understanding that tastes and preferences are unique to everyone.
Each creative vision brought to life by Savoir craftspeople results in a diverse collection of designs that can be customised and refined. From fabrics and finishes to the addition or removal of elements, our collaborative bed designs, like all our designs, offer endless possibilities. They inspire you to create your own bespoke bed, just as each designer was inspired to create theirs.
Savoir clients see bespoke design as an important differentiator. It allows them to make their mark. This is what inspired the idea of collaborations. We wanted to show what could be done and give our clients the ideas that’ll inspire them to create their own uniquely bespoke beds.
Sacha Walckhoff: innovation meets 1970s design
In 2015, Sacha Walckhoff visited the Savoir Bedworks in London to embark on a collaborative journey. Creative Director for Christian Lacroix since 2010, Sacha’s partnership with Savoir was one of his many personal ventures. Upon visiting the Bedworks, he was captivated by the 7.5-turn pocket springs used within our mattresses, thus deciding to integrate them into the headboard of his design. The result, known as the ‘B’ Bed, blends creativity with functionality. The design features a striking 1970s-inspired silhouette, a centrepiece made entirely out of pocket springs, and playful pod-like cubby holes. Paired with our Nº4 bed set, the bed offers not only a unique aesthetic but also the opportunity to experience the comfort benefits of pocket spring technology.
Teo Yang: lunar-inspired serenity
In 2017, Teo Yang designed a truly remarkable creation for Savoir, effortlessly showcasing the capabilities of our craftspeople along with his vision of a perfect sleep sanctuary. The South Korean lifestyle designer and founder of Teo Yang Studio draws inspiration from both historical contexts and nature to infuse his work with the simplicity and harmony characteristic of East Asian living. His ‘Moon’ bed design features a striking representation of lunar phases, with the full moon taking centre stage and two crescent moons as folding panels on either side. In East Asian folklore, the moon serves as a comforting presence throughout the night, making the bed design not only visually striking but also an embodiment of calm rest. The glazed metallic linen, reminiscent of moonlight, reflects Teo’s desire to bring the symbol of a peaceful night’s sleep into the bedroom and is perfectly complemented by our iconic Nº2 bed set.
The eastern culture perceives the moon as the goddess that watches over us during the night. I wanted to bring the symbol of a peaceful night’s sleep into the bedroom with this design.
Bill Amberg: nature’s calm reflected in design
Another nature-inspired design emerged from our collaboration with leather specialist Bill Amberg in 2019. Drawing inspiration from the ocean, the ‘Ocean’ bed uses watercolour techniques digitally printed onto leather. The result evokes the experience of swimming from the depths towards the surface at daybreak and witnessing the refraction of light through the water. Greens and blues combine to create an aquatic awe-like hue, mirroring the tranquil beauty of the sea and now also reflecting the ongoing desire for natural, serene tones in the home. The ‘Ocean’ design reminds us of our connection to nature and invites a sense of calm in the bedroom, embodying the very essence of Gaia.
Zandra Rhodes: where fashion meets furniture
In 2021, we collaborated with Dame Zandra Rhodes, who brought her legendary fashion flair to the realm of furniture design. Revisiting her archives, Zandra reimagined her renowned ‘Field of Lilies’ print from 1971. A gift of lilies from the Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake inspired Rhodes to sketch the delicate flowers, which later became one of her most significant and recognisable prints. The ‘Lilies’ bed embraces Zandra’s distinctive maximalist style, featuring an elegant arc of lilies that infuses the design with a timeless expression of peace and romance. The vibrant yet harmonious design embodies the spirit of bespoke artistry, smartly merging fashion and interior design.
Francis Sultana: Haute Couture elegance
One of our most recent collaborations is the ‘Louis’ bed, designed by Francis Sultana in 2022. Globally celebrated for his innovative approach to sculptural and statement interiors, our shared passion for natural and rare materials led to one of our most distinctive creations yet. Influenced by Elizabethan ruffs and collars, Francis moved beyond the traditional headboard shape with his collaborative design for Savoir. Named after King Louis XIII of France, known for his stylish ruff, and Louis Majorelle, a pioneer of Art Nouveau who designed remarkable beds for his own home, the Louis bed is a tribute to both figures. Crafted with bespoke green tweed fabric and custom-made legs, the Louis bed showcases Francis’ signature aesthetic. Featuring curved, winged edges that contrast strikingly with the rigid lines of the room’s structure, its impactful design fits seamlessly into both modern and classical interiors. Paired with our Nº2 bed set, the Louis adds a touch of Haute Couture elegance to any space.
With twenty collaborations over ten years, our craftspeople have brought a variety of creative ideas to life, from the witty and instantly recognisable ‘Nicky’ bed by Nicky Haslam to the incredibly versatile ‘Virginia’ bed by Virginia White; we have collaborated with some true visionaries. As we look to the next decade, we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of bespoke design and continuing to inspire you to craft a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture that reflects your personal style and individuality.
