The fusion of relaxation and craftsmanship is conveyed in the ‘Hugging Column’, designed by Mae Engelgeer

An installation showcasing the finest skills in craft for 'Wellness + Wonder' the recent Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition.
Hugging column design

Wallpaper* embraced ‘Wellness + Wonder’ at this year’s Handmade exhibition, the publication’s most ambitious annual project which takes place during Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Dedicated to the marriage of craftsmanship and design, Savoir was honoured to collaborate with Dutch textile designer, Mae Engelgeer. The aim of this partnership was to craft an installation which invites you to a place of total relaxation, the ‘Hugging Column.’

Using Savoir’s traditional expert bed-making skills and techniques, the softness of the Savoir Nº2 mattress & HW topper within the ‘Hugging Column,’ creates a super soft inner shell, perfect for cocooning, combined with the bouncy outer half-moon, the ideal hugging support.

Inspiration, sketches and finishing touches for the hugging column.

“People have to first take a step up and then embrace the space for a hug.”

Research has shown that hugging helps decrease heart rate and diminishes stress hormones; this is reflected within Mae’s design, to create a piece that accessorises the cult of self-improvement.

Mae reveals the inspiration behind the design, “The idea was to create a ‘hugging wall.’ People have to first take a step up and then embrace the space for a hug. The material on the inside makes the shape feel super soft; I wanted to create a calm space, where you can be alone. While the outer of the column offers an element of interaction with a slight bounciness for the hug. My idea was to show the inner bed on the side of the structure, like Savoir uses in its beds.”

Wallpaper* reflects on the collaboration, “Wallpaper* Handmade projects have a habit of taking designers and manufacturers outside their comfort zones and turning creative expectations on their heads. This was demonstrated when we asked British manufacturers Savoir Beds to transform one of its finely crafted beds into a vertical, huggable installation for our Wellness + Wonder showcase.”
